Principles Program

At Telos, we believe in principles of healthy, happy living.

As we choose to implement these "tried and true" principles, they will govern our choices. When we make correct choices based on true principles, we will attain a greater sense of stability and peace.

The Principles Program is a therapeutic curriculum that fosters stabilizing principles.   Examples of these principles are, work, tolerance, humility, family, self-confidence, etc.

Each principle requires your son to take active steps that are designed to facilitate the personal development of that principle. He will work closely with his therapist and a personal "Principles Coach" throughout this process.

     Principles Ceremony

During each Family Days (approx. every 10 weeks), your son will be recognized for his hard work at a special Principles Ceremony where medallions symbolizing the principles he has chosen to adopt are awarded.
     Therapy
First and foremost, we offer flexibility as we tailor the program to fit your son therapeutically. We have the potential to be a therapeutically intensive program--this means that your son will have over 30 hours of weekly contact with licensed clinicians. This therapeutic experience includes:

• A minimum of 3 hours of face-to-face contact with his personal therapist every week (for individual & family therapy).

• Morning exercise with one or more licensed clinicians.
"You can discover more about a person in an hour of play than in a year of conversation." -Plato

• Daily specialized therapy groups facilitated by licensed clinicians on a variety of topics (e.g., emotional management, substance abuse, adoption, trauma...etc.).

• Recreation therapy groups by a licensed recreation therapist. These are typically "fun" activities that have a powerful therapeutic benefit.

Twice daily (morning and evening) peer-run groups which address goals, planning, reporting and training.

                                           Supervision
Telos is a small, intimate program. This makes it difficult for students to "blend into the woodwork." We have five teams of 6-11 boys, and each team has 3 staff (mentors) in addition to our teachers, therapists, medical personnel and other support staff. This small team size and true 1:4 staff ratio creates a personalized, individual approach.

Telos students don't just deal with issues in the therapy office. Clinical staff communicate regularly with the mentors in an effort to implement clinical interventions in day-to-day living.

In addition to small teams and high staff ratios, each student selects one mentor that serves as a personal Principles Coach throughout his stay.

This staff works very closely with the student and his therapist, and may occasionally participate in individual therapy sessions. The Principles Coach is there to assist the boy with specific needs and serves as a source of support and encouragement.

We hire staff that are able to be caring in their approach while modeling healthy principles and clear boundaries.

Each staff member's personal character is the most important qualification in the hiring process. We avoid hiring staff who will want to engage in power struggles with our students and actively train all staff in relationship effectiveness techniques.

Because we expect our mentors to do more than just "hang out" with our students, Telos is a training-intensive program.
